The AAC course focuses on teaching Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for gestalt language processors, including different types of AAC, research-based strategies, and ways to obtain a robust AAC system. It also teaches how to assess and utilize a framework for Gestalt language processing and AAC, and how to customize AAC devices to best support Gestalt language processors.

In contrast, the Meaningful Speech course provides an overview of the two ways to process language, gestalt language processing, and analytic language processing. It teaches how to identify gestalt language processors and the Natural Language Acquisition framework (Blanc, 2012), which includes an in-depth understanding of the six stages of Natural Language Acquisition. The course also focuses on child-led therapy and maximizing opportunities for spontaneous language, with bonus modules covering related areas such as AAC, motor planning, sensory processing, and autism.

As a parent or caregiver, this course will help you understand gestalt language development, walk you through how to assess your child’s language through spontaneous language samples and give you step-by-step guidance on how to support your child through any/all the stages of gestalt language development (there are six!).  You have lifetime access and can log in and out anytime that works with your schedule.

This course is appropriate if your child has been diagnosed with autism as most autistic individuals are likely gestalt language processors.  If your child is not autistic, they could still be a Gestalt language processor.  This is a natural, normal way to develop language, but some kids need support as they don’t easily progress through the stages on their own.  If your child communicates mostly with single words or delayed echolalia (“jargon” like speech, scripts from movies/media, and/or long unintelligible strings of language with rich intonation), this course is likely for you!

The Meaningful Speech (GLP) course is a comprehensive “how to” course on gestalt language development.  It was written by a practicing clinician (speech-language pathologist) and includes a huge variety of videos of actual therapy sessions.  This course also has 40+ unique handouts that were designed to support you step by step as you begin to understand the history, research and background of gestalt language development, how to assess a child with spontaneous language samples and how to support them through any/all six stages of gestalt language development. 

Most SLPs are tired of taking classes and continuing education that are full of theory and not much practical advice on what to do “Monday in speech therapy.”  This course was designed to include some theory (that’s important of course!) BUT it’s heavy on practical advice and guidance that clinicians, professionals and parents need in order to support the gestalt language processors in their lives.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and SLPAs that take the course (core modules 2-7) and pass the final assessment with a score of 80% or higher are given the opportunity to join the registry. Once you receive a passing score you will be emailed with information and instructions regarding the registry.

Yes! While it is not CEUS, you can submit it for Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Each module offers anywhere from .5 to 2 PDH! The ONLY difference is you have to track your own PDH.  The ASHA registry only tracks CEUs. We have included a tracking form for you in the handouts! We also have a certificate of completion from ASHA that you can download after each module is completed.  Keep your certificate of course completion in case of an audit.

SLPs need 30 PDH or 3.0 CEUs every 3 years to maintain ASHA certification.

Please review the side-by-side comparison above.  SLPs/SLPAs are given the opportunity to obtain PDH from ASHA for every module. It is 26.5 hours of continuing education.  They are then able to take the final assessment, which is graded by an SLP, and they are given feedback specifically for them.  Finally, they also have the opportunity to be listed in the NLA Trained Clinician Registry with a passing score of 80% or higher on the final assessment.
